Packing List!
What to bring to Kodiak, Alaska!
Kodiak Temperatures
Kodiak Island is warm in the summer months with average temperatures around 60℉ during the day with occasional rain and drizzle. However, when on the ocean the temperatures are 10-20 degrees colder than on land, so bringing a good range of clothing is important.
Documents to bring
Health insurance card - Bring any health insurance policy information you may have
Personal ID - Bring a physical copy of any personal identification (ex. passport, driver’s license, state ID)
Required Fishing, Boating, Outdoor Gear
NOCP has some gear on site so you don’t need to go on a huge shopping spree before coming. As a fishing town, you can buy everything you’ll need here and NOCP also has some gear that participants can use.
Waterproof fishing boots
NOCP has used boots available. We have most sizes so no need to bring these along (unless you want to!)
Rain Gear (coat and pants)
We fish on the ocean rain or shine so it’s important to have the right gear (your typical “hiking rain jacket” won’t do you much good on the water ie. Marmot, North Face, etc)
NOCP also has ample gear that can be used. We have limited sizes and they are on a first-come-first-serve basis.
If you’d like to purchase your own, we recommend waiting until you arrive to buy rain gear (pants and jacket) as Kodiak offers some good options.
Recommended budget items. These can also be purchased in Kodiak!:
Helly Hansen Mandal Rain Pants ($43.95 in Kodiak)
Helly Hansen Mandal Rain Jacket ($43.95 in Kodiak)
Walking/hiking shoes
We’ll be hiking up some mountains. Sneakers are sufficient but if you have hiking shoes that have ankle support and grip we encourage you to bring them along. No need to buy new shoes - it’s better to wear something you’ve broken in already!
Scarf/Gaiter/Headband
These are a lifesaver and will keep your face warm when the boat is cruising and the wind can be quite cold.
Wool socks
You’ll wear these every day!
2 pairs are great! It’s an investment, but can make a huge difference keeping your feet warm and dry. Make sure they’re high enough up the ankle that they won’t slide down in your boots :). Look in your local store or these links:
Darn Tough Socks - these have a lifetime warranty
Warm gloves
NOCP has these available
Kodiak has good prices on insulated, waterproof gloves
Nothing too nice, they’ll get fishy!
Insulated, waterproof gloves: $14.06
Waterproof gloves: $6.01
Rubber finger/palm glove: $3.36

We recommend a winter hat and a hat with a visor (the sun is strong).

$25 in Kodiak
